The Planning Service is part of the City Development & Cultural Services committed to delivering regeneration and suitable development within the City, enabling it to meet present and future needs whilst improving its environment and everyone's quality of life.

What is the role?

Reporting to a Principal Planning Officer you will provide specialist technical support to the Development Management Team to enable the provision of an efficient, economic and effective service to customers.

The post-holder will be required to carry out the following duties:

• Provide day to day technical input into the processing of planning applications submitted under Town and Country Planning Acts, including being responsible for registration and validation of applications, initiating appropriate consultations / publicity, determination of and banking of appropriate fees, issuing and recording of decisions as required;

• Provide day to day technical input into the appeals, and enforcement processes under the Town and Country Planning Acts including preparation of relevant documents and collating of reports for Planning Committee as required including the preparation of graphic material as required;

• Update records and production of standard reports as required in support of Development Management processes;

• Communicate in writing, in person and by telephone with applicants, appellants, consultees, solicitors, builders, the planning inspectorate or colleagues within the Council with respect to the specific duties of the post;

• Provide prompt and accurate advice to all enquiries arising from the workload of the post and general advice on progress of work being dealt with by the Team.

Who is the person?

You need to have/be:

Education / training 1. Good English and mathematics skills

Knowledge and Experience 2. Previous experience of working in a busy office environment 3. Proven experience of dealing with a diverse set of customers 4. Confident in the use of Office, GIS and application databases in a business environment 5. Able to interpret land use and architectural plans 6. Experience in a local authority planning environment would be an advantage

Skills & Abilities 7. Good personal organisation and prioritisation of a wide range of tasks 8. Able to work as a supportive team member and as an individual 9. Experience in developing and maintaining good working relationships 10. Experience of working in a regulatory environment 11. Positive and flexible with good attention to detail 12. Seeks ways of improving processes and procedures and not afraid to challenge the way they are done 13. Able to work on own initiative and to work under and respond positively to pressure 14. Diplomatic and confident in all contacts with internal and external colleagues and other business contacts
