The Private Sector Housing Team has an important role in ensuring that the privately owned housing stock of Portsmouth is in a satisfactory condition to ensure that occupants are living in decent and safe accommodation. We do this through enforcing Housing law and providing financial assistance to home owners.
What is the job?
As part of our in-house Home Improvement Agency, you will work with our clients, who are often vulnerable or elderly, to support them through the experience of having contractors carry out repairs and improvements to their home, as well as to advise and assist them with simple grant applications. You will be inspecting works while they are on site work to ensure it is undertaken to a satisfactory standard. You will also deal with unforeseen works that may be found during larger redevelopments and ensure that the client is informed and satisfied with the service we provide. You will be expected to provide written feedback on all site inspections made to the appropriate case officer and liaise with them concerning any potential problems.
What other members of the team have said about the role:
"It's great to have a job where I'm out and about looking at different things and meeting different people rather than being in an office all day. It's really varied and interesting."
"I really enjoy speaking to the clients, making them feel reassured about the building work that's happening to their home. I really feel like I make a difference."
You need to:
• Have appropriate qualifications in a relevant building or construction related subject such as a trade based NVQ, or equivalent. We will consider applicants who have no formal qualifications, but have gained extensive knowledge in building construction through work experiences. • Have experience of acting in a supervisory capacity on construction sites. • Demonstrate good practical construction knowledge, being able to assess the quality of a range of work undertaken, identify any remedial work if required and be able to clearly instruct the contractor accordingly. • Have a strong attention to detail when checking works and materials on site, with the ability to identify if they do not comply with the specification. • Have knowledge and be able to apply construction related health & safety legislation generally, with the ability to identify if these are being adhered to on site. • Have excellent people skills with the ability to resolve conflict, but have a sympathetic, friendly and empathetic manner to be able to understand the situations of our customers and reassure them if they have concerns. • Have the organisational skills to manage and prioritise your workload. • Be comfortable using a computer and have good knowledge of Microsoft packages and databases. • Hold a full driving license and provide a car for work, as driving is an essential part of the role.
Closing: 17:00 on 19.08.15
