The Service
The overall purpose of Sheltered Housing is to provide the right accommodation and support when needed.
Sheltered Housing is purpose built accommodation offering support and security for older persons. In Sheltered Housing we promote independent living but with the knowledge that someone is always on hand to give support and available to help in an emergency.
You will be working to promote independent living for residents in the flats within a sheltered scheme. Residents have their own tenancy agreement with Portsmouth City Council therefore residents are able to live independently in their own accommodation but with support available as needed. In some schemes there are shared areas in which residents can enjoy some social activities.
What is the Role?
To assist our frailer, older residents to maintain their independence & wellbeing and to contribute to the purpose of Sheltered Housing.
As a Cat 1 scheme manager you will take overall responsibility for the management of a Category 1 sheltered scheme, ensuring the overall welfare of all its sheltered tenants. Some of schemes are in smaller blocks and you may be responsible for providing the service to more than one scheme. Some of our sheltered schemes are in purpose built blocks with shared areas of the schemes in which residents can enjoy some social activities.
Your role will include acting as an advocate for residents when working with other agencies and services and also providing the link to social services ensuring that residents are aware of appropriate support services.
Although you will form part of the Sheltered Housing Team as a Cat 1 manager you will spend a lot of your time as a lone worker although you will be able to pull for help and support when needed. You will need to be confident in making decisions and following these through as a lone worker.
The role requires a great deal of flexibility and on occasions you will be required to provide the sheltered housing service to residents in other schemes.
You will be responsible for ensuring that you respond to any incidents and problems relating to the residents, to accurate record information and incident reports and liaise with members of the resident's families. Where appropriate you will have the responsibility for raising safeguarding alerts
You will be responsible for ensuring the completion and updating of the needs and risk assessments, support plans and pull cord checks with all your residents in addition to other checks including the alarm system and health and safety issues. You will also be responsible for ensuring that all your residents' files are updated on a regular basis to reflect any changes that have occurred or any information that other team members will need to be aware of in the event of providing the service in your absence.
As a Cat 1 manager you will be responsible in encouraging social activities in the scheme for your residents. Where a scheme does not have a separate area for social activities then you would look at alternative venues or other ways in which you could encourage social activities for residents who expressed an interest in this.You will also be responsible for ensuring that all monies collected are properly recorded and accounted for.
Your role will also include providing various levels of support to residents ranging from daily visits to ensure all is well, through to helping with bills and rent payment, arranging for support with daily chores and shopping and helping residents arrange repairs where relevant.
Part of the role will also include meeting and greeting new tenants, introducing them to the scheme and making them aware of the service they can expect to receive.
Who is the person?
You need to have:
1 Experience of working directly (face to face) with people 2 Be confident in being able to lone work as you will spend much of your time lone working, including responding to problems and emergencies as they arise. 3 The ability to prioritise workloads and self-manage your time effectively to meet the different needs of each resident 4 The ability to work alongside other agencies to share information & achieve the best outcome for service users. 5 Have an understanding of the role of Social Services, Health Services and voluntary agencies in the provision of services to people. 6 Have good verbal, written and numeracy skills as you will be liaising with people at all levels as well as compiling reports for residents files. 7 Excellent people skills, for example patience and listening skills in order to gain the trust of residents and their families and to understand their expectations. 8 An awareness of the importance of confidentiality and professional boundaries when working with older persons. 9 Be self-motivated and be able to use your own initiative whilst recognising and understanding policies and procedures in place. 10 A caring nature that works to enable people to maintain their independence in their own home as long as possible. 11 The confidence and ability to work effectively to solve problems and respond to emergencies as they arise 12 The physical ability to participate in moving and handling of people tasks. 13 The ability to promote social activities in the scheme where applicable 14 Basic IT skills, including the use of Microsoft Outlook and experience of using word/Excel. You also need to be able to use in house databases as required. 15 Good numeracy skills 16 Be willing to attend relevant job training 17 The use of a car is preferable for some of the above posts as the schemes you are covering are not within a walkable distance but this is not essential for all the posts.
