Interview date: 26 April 2017

The School of Education and Childhood Studies is seeking to employ a Reader in the School of Education and Childhood Studies. The successful candidate will join a thriving University with an ambitious new strategic vision and a growing and dynamic team of education and childhood and youth studies researchers.

The department has a number of research strengths in health, wellbeing, the sociology and psychology of childhood and youth studies, the higher education student experience and a significant reputation in teacher education with an ‘outstanding’ OFSTED grade.

The successful candidate will be able to contribute to the growing research area in SECS related to the links between Education and Health/Well-Being (multi-agency working with children, families, care leavers, educational interventions etc) and education policy.

Therefore, we are seeking applications that can cover one or more of these areas of education studies and/or childhood and youth studies.

The expected start date is August 2017.

The successful candidate will provide academic leadership and inspiration to the department’s research community and the growing number of education researchers in the University (including the University’s Higher Education Research Forum). They will lead, direct and co-ordinate the research activities in the department and make an outstanding contribution to the research culture of the department and Faculty. In addition, they will be expected to align the department’s research activities with one or more of the University’s cross-disciplinary research themes (Health and Wellbeing; Democratic Citizenship; Security and Risk; Future and Emerging Technologies; Sustainability and the Environment).

The successful candidate will contribute to the postgraduate curriculum (MA Education Studies, MSc Educational Leadership and Management, Professional Doctorate in Education) where appropriate, lead the Professional Doctorate team, and supervise MRes and PhD students in her/his area of expertise.

Applicants for the post are expected to have a background in one or more of the following disciplines: Childhood Studies, Youth Studies, Education Studies, Sociology, Psychology, Educational Leadership and Management, and Policy Studies.

Interested applicants are invited to contact the Head of School, Dr Peter Starie or for an informal chat.

Please note this post is also available as a ZZ003461 – Professor in Education and/or Childhood Studies

Although the post is available as either a Professor or Reader, only one appointment will be made. Please note each post has a different person specification/ job description.
