Portsmouth City Council has employed a specialist UK tourism public relations consultancy in order to promote the city and attract more tourists.
The PR follows a series of television adverts aimed at those living in London and seeking a break – they highlighted Portsmouth’s varied attractions. There was also a poster campaign on the London Underground.
On the face of it the new marketing has done it’s job with Portsmouth’s tourism website receiving 53 per cent more visits and an increase of 110 per cent from the London area.
Mike Hancock, the council’s cabinet member for planning, regeneration and economic development said: “Tourism is a vital element of our economy in Portsmouth supporting around 11,000 jobs in the city. This campaign is simply about reminding people of all the fantastic attractions and events we have in Portsmouth that should be an essential part of their summer break.”
